Conceiving Positive Postdigital Classrooms (invited talk)

19/6/2026

I'm looking forward to visiting Bath Spa University next week (22 June) to participate in a research symposium hosted by Chloe Shu-Hua Yeh, Sarah Hayes  and colleagues: Dialogues of Educational Science and Technology to Enhance Learning and Teaching. Here, from my abstract, is what I'll be talking about:
Digital technologies have profoundly affected where, how and when university teaching and learning happens. Within our postdigital world, advances in online pedagogy, combined with the widespread presence and portability of digital devices that enable access to a vast body of web-based educational resources, have troubled traditional understandings of ‘classroom’ and ‘campus’. Digital technologies, entangled with other conditions, increasingly enable educational activity to take place in what we would see as ostensibly domestic, social and transitory settings. There have also emerged new opportunities for asynchronous learning, which has lessened the pedagogical constraints previously imposed by timetabling and the reliance on physical classrooms. In this session I will propose how we might conceive positive postdigital classrooms for the near future.
My talk will build upon a few pieces of work that I've done over the last few years, including the edited collection that I put together with Lucila Carvalho, Postdigital Learning Spaces: Towards Convivial, Equitable and Sustainable Spaces for Learning, a follow up conversation that Lucila and I had with Laura Czerniewicz, and then commentary I wrote which proposed how we might combine postdigital and futures thinking to conceive spaces for learning. There will also be a flavour of some ongoing work I'm doing with David Overend and Laura Bissell, that emerged from our initial thinking about postdigital learning journeys. I'll be tweaking the slides on the train journey from Edinburgh on Sunday, after which I'll add them here.
