Fixture: AK07 Berlin vs Herth Berlin II Competition: Regioanliga Nordest Venue: Poststadion, Berlin Attendance: A few hundred, including a handful of atonal but good natured Hertha teen Ultras.
Our third game in three days, and perhaps a match too far. A rarity, we left before full time to see whether Berlin had anything to offer over and above fussball. Nevertheless, a nice historic ground with vast former terraces now submerged beneath forest. The only structure of note was the art-deco main stand. This game had been billed as a joint 225-year anniversary between AK07 and Hertha Berlin (whose B team were the visiting opposition). Presumably to coincide with this manufactured anniversary, entry cost only 2 Euros 25. Another point of interest, judging by the crowd, team and groundstaff, AK07 are another Turkish community team, our second of the weekend. There was a nice community feel as a result, with lots of warm greetings and conversation between supporters.
Despite feeling a bit fatigued, this was still worth the walk from the centre of the city, along Unter der Linden, around the Brandenburg Gate and then past the Reichstag. At the edge of the Tiergarten we stopped to visit the memorial for members of the gypsy community killed by the Nazis. Not a typical pre-match routine but a necessary one considering the city we were visiting.
