Selecting artefacts for use in interviews

7/1/2013

The arrangement I previously discussed with Sian (at least partly at her suggestion) was to invite participants to bring two multimodal assessment artefacts to the interview. One would be a strong one, another would be less effective. At least I think it was. Or maybe I would identify the strong one from the course gallery and invite the participant to select one that they felt was less strong.

Instead I wonder I should select two different assessment for use across interviews. These needn't be a pre-determined good and bad, but simply two examples that use different assemblages of mode within the representation of ideas.

My thinking here is that it might be interesting to get different tutor perspectives on how they would approach the two different artifacts. It might make for useful comparison in attitudes between different tutors. I wonder whether it might help to identify some common patterns - or contrasting positions - that would be interesting to consider in relation to the literature on the subject.

In addition, the idea that I should determine what is a strong/weak assignment is something I find problematic. Much better, I think, that I ask participants how thet respond to the different artifacts rather than attempting to make my own value judgements on them in advance.

I think it would be interesting to see how the participants would approach two assignments that are quite different in form from an assessment perspective.

And from a pragmatic perspective, this would make my job a bit easier as I wouldn't have to attempt to mark the assignments in advance, as I proposed.

I'll need to put this to Sian.

Making contact with E-Learning tutors (draft)

It's too late in the evening to attempt any reading, so instead I'm going to spend a bit of time drafting an email that I'll send to members of the MSc in E-Learning course team to see whether they are appropriate and willing to participate in an interview.
Dear //////

Firstly, I hope this message finds you well and that had a pleasant and restful Christmas break.

I am contacting you in relation to my dissertation for the MSc in E-Learning: 'A constellation of image, text and sound: exploring multimodal assessment in the digital classroom'. The focus of my research will be upon the experience and attitude of online tutors towards multimodal assessment, focusing on tutors from the MSc in E-Learning. I have attached the abstract for my proposed research. I intend to consider three key questions:

-What rationale do tutors apply when choosing to make use of multimodal assessment?

-What are the implications in terms of interpreting the quality of a multimodal assignment? In particular, how are assessment criteria defined in order to judge the quality of a multimodal artifact?

-How does a shift towards multimodal assessment reframe the role and experience of the marker?

With the encouragement of Sian (my dissertation supervisor) I am contacting you to enquire whether you have experience of assessing assignments that present ideas across a range of modes (for instance video, web essays, Second Life builds) and if so, whether you would be willing to be interviewed for my research.

My intention is to conduct face-to-face interviews during February however I will be flexible on both counts to accommodate participants. Assuming you are prepared to consider taking part in an interview, I will of course provide you with more detail including a participant consent form. Should you require additional information at this stage however, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for taking time to consider my request and I look forward to hearing from you at your convenience.

Kind regards,

A possible exercise to include within my methodology

Clara suggested inviting interview participants to bring a piece of multimodal assessment to the interview. I wonder instead whether I should present the participants with a piece of multimodal assessment and use it as a source of discussion? I quite like this idea.

I met Clara on other matters yesterday afternoon however we talked about my dissertation as well.
  • Invite interview participants to bring an example of a multimodal assignment to the interview to job their memory.
  • The fact that I don't have experience of marking multimodal assignment could be significant. Mention in my methodology that part of my background research ahead of the interviews will be to mark a piece of multimodal work from one of my MSc E-L peers. It could come from the Course Gallery.
  • There could be ethical implications of looking at (or inviting interview participants to discuss) examples of submitted assignments. Would permission of students be required?
  • Look at Royce Sadler's work on quality.
  • Look at Online Assessment literature - good stuff about quality in there.

and the really big question:

  • "Am I going to find out anything interesting?"

The answer, yes, I think so.
