Online assessment: a possible dissertation theme

Reasons in favour of selecting an online assessment as the focus of my dissertation:
  • I enjoyed the Online Assessment course - it would sustain my interest
  • I did well on the course
  • I found the literature on the subject well written and interesting
  • It has a professional application to my work
  • There's a clear professional relevance, within the University and beyond
  • It might be a subject that participants (course tutors) would be interested in being interviewed about
  • It would be presumably be of interest to DEI
  • I'm guest tutoring on the OA course again this year so there's a career thread there
This would seem to satisfy the criteria suggested in the Dissertation Guide that I gave some thought to last week. The are practical and logistical benefits (potential DEI and tutor cooperation, could be justified within the context of my current employment), is of personal interest and professional relevance (career angle, significance within the university) and, as an overall theme, would be seen as academic relevant with a view to the assessment criteria.

...and some arguments against opting for online assessment as the focus of my dissertation
  • Online Assessment was interesting and enjoyable, but not as much so as some parts of EDC. I've been told that the dissertation is an opportunity to do something fun and experimental - does OA fit that bill? But then, I'm not sure this is the time to be experimental anyway.
  • I presumably wouldn't be working with Sian as my dissertation tutor which would be a real shame. However I presumably might work with Clara and that has worked out well for me so far on the  MSc programme.
  • I can't think of any other reasons against but reserve the right to come back and add to this discussion!
On balance then, there's a strong case for looking at online assessment.
